Albany is a city of
thousands of people off the banks of the Flint River in southwestern
Georgia. The city which is the county seat of Dougherty County
features historical attractions. Visitors can learn about the Flint
River, the Civil Rights Movement and the history of the area. Theater
goers will enjoy a theater with original and popular shows.
Albany Civil Rights
Institute
In 1961, area
community organizations formed The Albany Movement to have a unified
civil rights group. The group held meetings at Mt. Zion Church,
including ones where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke. Albany in Georgia
is one of the first cities where four national civil rights groups
united. Nowadays, Mt. Zion Church accommodates the Albany Civil
Rights Institute, which tells the story of civil rights in
southwestern Georgia from slavery to the present day.
Flint RiverQuarium
The Flint RiverQuarium
describes the nearby Flint River with more than hundred species of
aquatic life, hands-on exhibits and a theater three stories high. The
Blue Hole Spring is a twenty-two foot deep and 175,000-gallon area
with more than 120 types of alligators, turtles, and fishes. Visitors
can also see an aviary with birds from the watershed of the river.
Theatre Albany
Since 1932, Theatre
Albany which is one of the
Albany GA attractions has been bringing professional shows to
southwest Georgia. In 1964, it moved into the antebellum, i.e.,
white-columned house of Captain John A. Davis. The National Register
of Historic Places noted the building in 1980. The venue has a number
of performances throughout the year which includes original works,
Broadway productions and classic dramas.
